Samsung Galaxy S8 Active Specifications Leaked via Geekbench

HIGHLIGHTS
The Galaxy S8 Active scored 6394 in the multi-core tests
It is expected to come with a Snapdragon 835 chipset
It is also expected to house a larger battery
Samsung has made it a point to launch a rugged version of its flagship smartphones in recent years. Like the Galaxy S6 Active and Galaxy S7 Active of the past, the South Korean giant is tipped to launch an ‘Active’ version of its newest Galaxy S8 flagship phone. A hint of this was first spotted in May when the Galaxy S8 Active with model number SM-G892A was listed to support Netflix in HDR. The smartphone has now popped up on Geekbench with some of its specifications detailed.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active with the model number SM-G892A scored a 1842 in single-core and 6394 in the multi-core tests on Geekbench, which is fairly close to what the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ scored earlier. Further, the specifications mentioned also fall in line with the recently launched flagships including an octa-core Snapdragon 835 chipset coupled with 4GB of RAM. The Galaxy S8 Active is listed running Android 7.0 NougatSamsung Galaxy S8 Active Specifications Leaked via Geekbench

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is expected to house a larger battery compared to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, much like the case with the Galaxy S7 Active, which housed a 4,000mAh battery compared to the 3000mAh seen in the Galaxy S7. In terms of looks, don’t expect the the ‘Active’ version to be as pretty as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The Galaxy S8 Active may lack the curved edges of the flagship and could feature a bulkier, more rugged casing for rough, outdoor use.
One hopes the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active doesn’t face the same water resistant issues that plagued the Galaxy S7 Active. To recall, Consumer Reports last year claimed that the Galaxy S7 Active didn’t meet the same waterproof standards that the company promised.

While there’s no official word on when the Galaxy S8 Active will hit the streets, you can expect the unveiling to be around the corner seeing as how the Galaxy S7 Active was launched around the same time last year.

Samsung Galaxy Book review: An excellent 2-in-1 for a good price

Samsung’s Galaxy Book is a 2-in-1 tablet with a detachable keyboard that gets pretty much everything you care about right. Its price, performance, and battery life are all among the best we’ve tested.

While it lacks the razzle-dazzle of flagships like the new Surface Pro, it’s still the sort of all-around performer that will attract a buyer looking for good value. Samsung’s only real swing and miss is a somewhat gimmicky integration with its Galaxy smartphones, which replaces the Windows Hello features that are becoming more common.

Price: Galaxy Book’s value proposition

While some competing 2-in-1 products we’ve reviewed cost upwards of $1,400, the version of the Samsung Galaxy Book we tested ships for $1,300. The price includes 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, plus optional LTE connectivity via Verizon. A more full-featured version starts with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. There’s also a microSD card slot that accepts cards up to 256GB. Inside you’ll find 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth 4.1 BLE.

The Galaxy Book family also offers a smaller 10.6-inch tablet, with a 7th-generation Core m3 inside, starting at $630. For both sizes, the associated keyboard and pen ship for free, a trend we’d like to see become more common.

Samsung Galaxy Book

Adam Patrick Murray

The Galaxy Book’s beautiful Super AMOLED display is definitely a selling point.

Samsung rightfully earns praise for its bright, vibrant displays, and the Galaxy Book is no different. The 12-inch, 2,160×1,440 Super AMOLED touchscreen shines 355 nits’ worth of light into your eyeballs, and displays rich colors—though without the advanced options Microsoft built into its Surface Pro. Part of that has to do with the Galaxy Book’s integrated high-dynamic range (HDR) capability, which allows the screen to render brighter brights and deeper blacks. This is a feature typically found on high-end televisions, so the Galaxy Book is unusual, and perhaps unique, among Windows tablets in having it.

I expected the Galaxy Book to lean a bit more upon Samsung’s legacy of quality Android tablets, however. It’s no crime to exclude a physical Windows button, as the Galaxy Book does. I was a bit surprised, though, to discover that the screen bezel was a bit on the chunky side. The Galaxy Book’s dimensions are fine: 11.47 x 7.87 x 0.29 inches, and just over 2.5 pounds with the keyboard attached, or about 2.78 pounds if you add the small, cellular-style USB-C power charger. Still, the tablet felt somewhat awkward to hold in the hand.

Samsung Galaxy Book vs Surface Pro 4

Adam Patrick Murray

Though the Surface Pro 4 (bottom) is thicker than the Galaxy Book, it weighs slightly less when you attach both keyboards.

Features: A mobile pedigree, for better and for worse

Unfortunately, buying a Galaxy Book brings up a new consideration for many: what USB standard your peripherals use. Samsung has committed wholeheartedly to USB-C, with a pair of ports than can be used for charging or for peripherals. That’s fine for phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8, which use USB-C for charging but rarely connect to a wired USB device. The PC ecosystem encompasses a vast number of legacy devices, however, and you undoubtedly own some pre-USB-C device that you’ll want to connect to the Galaxy Book. At least Samsung was somewhat merciful: There’s a traditional headphone jack.

Samsung Galaxy Book USB-C

Adam Patrick Murray

One of these things is not like the other.

Because the two USB-C connections are the only I/O ports available, you’ll either need to invest in USB-C dongles or think about buying new gear.  A $20 USB-C hub, with three USB-A connections and an ethernet jack, is one option. Even better, Samsung is currently offering a free multi-port USB-C adapter if you order the Galaxy Book directly from the company.

Samsung clearly tapped its mobile team in other aspects of the design. Some people simply love taking photos with a tablet’s rear camera, and Samsung’s high-quality 13MP part should serve you well. Photos were sharp and bright, although the tablet can take seconds to focus. A more mundane 5MP camera sits up front.

Samsung Galaxy Book S-Pen

Adam Patrick Murray

The S-Pen may be a bit less ergonomic than other styluses, but you don’t have to charge it, either.

The Samsung Galaxy Book also ships with an S-Pen, the Samsung stylus that its Note phones made famous. Though I’ve begged other 2-in-1 vendors to secure the pen internally, as the Samsung Galaxy Note does, the Galaxy Book ignored my pleas.

HTC U11 vs Samsung Galaxy S8 vs LG G6 vs Sony Xperia XZ Premium: Price in India, Specifications Compared

HIGHLIGHTS

  • HTC U11 was launched in India on Friday
  • The smartphone will be available for purchase from later this month
  • HTC U11 has been priced in India at Rs. 51,990

HTC launched the HTC U11 ‘squeezable’ smartphone in India on Friday and interestingly, the company chose to skip the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant for the country and introduced only the 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant. The smartphone has been priced at Rs. 51,990 and in this price range it will be competing against the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium. If you are confused whether HTC U11 is the right smartphone for you or another model is better, we will help you figure out how it compares against the competition.

HTC U11
The HTC U11 runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with the company’s HTC Sense skin on top. It sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD (1440×2560 pixels) Super LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top. Powering the HTC U11 is a 2.45GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC and, as mentioned earlier, the India variant gets 6GB of RAM. It is offered with 128GB of built-in storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB).

The smartphone’s unique feature is called Edge Sense, which allows users to launch apps, switch on flash light, or even take screenshots by simply squeezing the smartphone from its sides.

The HTC U11 features a 12-megapixel rear camera with 1.4-micron pixel, ultra spread autofocus, BSI sensor, OIS, f/1.7 aperture, dual-LED flash, slow-motion, and 4K video recording. Over on the front, you get a 16-megapixel camera with BSI sensor, full-HD recording.

Some of the camera features of the HTC U11 include Face Detection, Pro mode with manual control, 32-second long exposure, and RAW format support, HDR Boost, Panorama, and Hyperlapse. Additionally, the front camera gets live make-up, auto selfie, voice selfie, HDR Boost, and Selfie Panorama options. The company claims that the HTC U11 achieved that highest ever rating for a smartphone camera by independent metric DxOMark1 with a score of 90.

Samsung Galaxy S8
While the South Korean company launched the Galaxy S8 smartphone with Snapdragon 835 processor internationally, it launched the phone with Exynos 9985 processor variant in India. Currently available at Rs. 57,900, the Samsung Galaxy S8 runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box and sports a 5.8-inch bezel-less ‘Infinity Display’ with 1440×2960 pixel resolution. The Galaxy S8 packs 4GB of RAM and features 64GB internal storage, which is expandable up to 256GB.

In terms of optics, the Galaxy S8 comes with a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel camera and an 8-megapixel camera at front. The connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, and a USB Type-C port. The smartphone houses a 3000mAh battery that supports fast-charging.

While in terms of performance, Snapdragon 835 processor definitely puts HTC U11 ahead of the G6, the recent price drop and the FullVision display might make it the preferable choice for some customers.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium
Sony launched its Xperia XZ Premium smartphone in India earlier this month. The smartphone is currently available in India at a price of Rs. 59,990. The highlight feature on the smartphone is its 19-megapixel Motion Eye camera with a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS memory stacked sensor that’s capable of shooting videos at 960 frames per second. At front, the Xperia XZ Premium has a 13-megapixel sensor 1/3.06-inch Exmor RS sensor that’s coupled with 22mm wide-angle f/2.0 lens.

The phone runs Android 7.1 Nougat and sports a 5.5-inch 4K (2160×3840 pixels) HDR Triluminos display. Notably, Xperia XZ Premium was the first smartphone with Snapdragon 835 that was launched in India. The phone features 4GB of RAM and comes with 64GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB). The Xperia XZ Premium houses a 3230mAh non-removable battery with support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology.HTC U11 vs Samsung Galaxy S8 vs LG G6 vs Sony Xperia XZ Premium: Price in India, Specifications Compared

The connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C (3.1), and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Conclusion
As you can see from the specifications, HTC U11 offers more RAM than other smartphones in comparison and has other basics covered too. However, the unique design offered by Galaxy S8 and the FullVision display offered by LG might be preferred by many users. Xperia XZ Premium is the most expensive smartphone under consideration. Stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for our retailed review of the HTC U11 and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium.

Nokia 6 vs Samsung Galaxy On Max vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 vs Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime: Price, Specifications Compared

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nokia 6 will be available exclusively through Amazon in India
  • The smartphone will be up for registrations from July 14
  • It has been priced at Rs. 14,999

Nokia 6, priced in India at Rs. 14,999, is finally up for registrations via Amazon India, and the first sale is scheduled for August 23. The best-specced of the NokiaAndroid phones available internationally, the Nokia 6 provides the stock Android Nougat experience, has a big screen, metallic body, and elegant design. However, it is not the only great smartphone at this price point, since Samsung has released two new models – the Galaxy On Max and Galaxy J7 Prime – with competitive hardware and software, while the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4(4GB + 64GB) continues its strong showing in the market. We take a look at how the Nokia 6 fares against the three rivals in terms of price and specifications.

Nokia 6 price, specifications

Nokia 6, priced at Rs. 14,999, runs Android 7.0 Nougat and sports a 5.5-inch full-HD 2.5D screen with Corning Gorilla Glass protection and a fingerprint sensor right below the display. The smartphone is powered by Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with 3GB of RAM. In terms of optics, Nokia 6 comes with a 16-megapixel rear sensor and an 8-megapixel camera at front for taking selfies.

The new Nokia Android phone comes with 32GB inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card up to 128GB. Nokia 6 houses a 3000mAh battery, features a 6000 series aluminium body, and has inbuilt dual speakers and Dolby Atmos support. Connectivity options on the smartphone include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, USB OTG, FM, 3G, and 4G.

Samsung Galaxy On Max price, specifications

The new Samsung Galaxy On Max, launched earlier this month at Rs. 17,990, is already selling at Rs. 16,900 online. The smartphone has Android 7.0 Nougat-based custom software, 5.7-inch full-HD screen, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, and 3300mAh battery. One of its highlights is the 13-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, which delivers better photos in lowlight conditions; the 13-megapixel front camera has f/1.9 aperture. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core 1.69GHz MediaTek MTK P25 Lite processor, and supports storage expansion up to 256GB.

Samsung Galaxy On Max’s Home button has an integrated fingerprint sensor, and is used to make mobile payments using the Samsung Pay Mini standard. With this payment, users can make purchases via UPI and mobile wallet despite the absence of NFC.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 price, specifications

The Xiaomi smartphone is currently available in India in three variants, 2GB RAM/ 32GB inbuilt storage, 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage. As the 4GB RAM variant is closest to Nokia 6 in terms of pricing, available at Rs. 12,999, we will be considering it for the comparison with new Nokia offering.

Nokia 6 vs Samsung Galaxy On Max vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 vs Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime: Price, Specifications Compared

The dual-SIM (Micro+Nano) Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 runs MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) 2.5D curved glass IPS display and is powered by the Snapdragon 625 SoC. Its rear camera bears a 13-megapixel CMOS sensor equipped with PDAF (phase detection autofocus), an f/2.0 aperture, 77-degree wide angle lens, and dual-tone LED flash. The Redmi Note 4 front camera sports a 5-megapixel CMOS sensor, coupled with an 85-degree wide angle lens. Expandable storage is available on the Redmi Note 4 via a hybrid dual-SIM card configuration, supporting microSD cards (up 128GB). The connectivity options on the smartphone include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, Infrared, USB OTG, FM, 3G and 4G.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime

Moving to the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime smartphone, the dual-SIM (Micro-SIM) smartphone runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out-of-the-box and sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) IPS display with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4. It is powered by an octa-core 1.6GHz processor coupled with 3GB of RAM. At Rs. 15,500, it is priced closer to the Nokia 6 compared to its sibling Galaxy On Max.

In terms of optics, the Galaxy J7 Prime features a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.9 aperture and LED flash. On the front is an 8-megapixel camera with f/1.9 aperture. The smartphone comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB). The connectivity options on the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS/ A-GPS, Bluetooth v4.1, Micro-USB (with OTG), and a 3.5mm audio jack. It houses a 3300mAh battery and measures 151.5×74.9×8.1mm.

Now that you know more about Nokia 6 and its competition, it is fairly clear that the competition offers some powerful specs in comparison to the smartphone. However, the real choice you will have to make is whether you are ready to compromise on specs offered on sheets for the nostalgia factor and the stock Android Nougat experience. We will learn more about Nokia 6 and its performance in the coming days, and let you know in our review if the smartphone is worth the wait or not.

Google Play Music’s New Feature for Samsung Galaxy S8 Isn’t That Exclusive

HIGHLIGHTS
New Google Play Music feature now rolling out
Samsung Galaxy S8 users getting the New Release Radio station
Some users able to use the new feature on non-Samsung devices
For Samsung Galaxy S8 users, Google Play Music is the default music player and streaming service. Now, Galaxy S8 users are receiving a brand new feature dubbed New Release Radio, which is a personalised radio station with new music releases and updates on a daily basis.

The latest New Release Radio feature has steadily been popping up on Galaxy S8 devices with “Samsung Exclusive” tagline. The pop-up describes the new feature, “Listen to brand new music, personalised to your tastes and listening history – with new recommendations every day.” The feature was first spotted by a Reddit user, and was reported by Sammobile.Google Play Music's New Feature for Samsung Galaxy S8 Isn't That Exclusive

Engadget, however, points out that the feature may not be limited to Samsung Galaxy S8 users as some users have been able to add the “New Release Radio” station to their libraries. Some Reddit users also claim that they were able to add the new feature to their libraries while using Google Play Music Web interface as well as on non-Samsung devices. Unfortunately, there’s no word whether the feature will be kept as an exclusive for Samsung Galaxy S8 (and Galaxy S8+) devices or to be made available to all users in the long run.
We can expect an update on the status of availability of the “New Release Radio” station for non-Samsung devices.

Samsung and Google jointly announced their new partnership back in April, and it gave some benefits to Samsung users. They were allowed to upload 100,000 of their own songs to Google Play Music for free, which is almost double the limit for owners of non-Samsung devices.
